Assessing extinction risk across the geographic ranges of plant species in Europe

چکیده

Societal Impact Statement Plants play fundamental roles in ecosystems, yet merely 10% of species have an assessment their global extinction risk. Through the integration national Red Lists and comprehensive plant distribution data, we identify previously unassessed Europe that are threatened throughout geographic range thus at risk extinction. Our workflow can be replicated to facilitate disparate monitoring efforts around world help accelerate assessments. Summary A for is a biodiversity target. However, currently, only diversity assessed List Threatened Species. To guide conservation restoration actions times accelerated extinction, assessments must expedited. Here, examine vascular through two data streams: (1) (2) from Kew's World Online database. For each listed on List, create list countries form part its indicate threat status these countries, allowing us calculate percentage which given as threatened. We find 7% 9% European entire range, majority single‐country endemics. Of globally species, 84% currently no List. With increasing commitments shaping post‐2020 policy environment, anticipate integrating with scalable plants.

Patterns of species ranges, speciation, and extinction.

The exact nature of the relationship among species range sizes, speciation, and extinction events is not well understood. The factors that promote larger ranges, such as broad niche widths and high dispersal abilities, could increase the likelihood of encountering new habitats but also prevent local adaptation due to high gene flow. Similarly, low dispersal abilities or narrower niche widths co...

Geographic range size and extinction risk assessment in nomadic species

Geographic range size is often conceptualized as a fixed attribute of a species and treated as such for the purposes of quantification of extinction risk; species occupying smaller geographic ranges are assumed to have a higher risk of extinction, all else being equal. However many species are mobile, and their movements range from relatively predictable to-and-fro migrations to complex irregul...

Postglacial migration supplements climate in determining plant species ranges in Europe

The influence of dispersal limitation on species ranges remains controversial. Considering the dramatic impacts of the last glaciation in Europe, species might not have tracked climate changes through time and, as a consequence, their present-day ranges might be in disequilibrium with current climate. For 1016 European plant species, we assessed the relative importance of current climate and li...

Incorporating latitudinal and central-marginal trends in assessing genetic variation across species ranges.

The genetic variation across a species' range is an important factor in speciation and conservation, yet searching for general patterns and underlying causes remains challenging. While the majority of comparisons between central and marginal populations have revealed a general central-marginal (C-M) decline in genetic diversity, others show no clear pattern. Similarly, most latitudinal studies ...
